Sabbath Moments

We all need times in which we are refreshed physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Fellow Catholic blogger Colleen Spiro refers to these times as “Sabbath moments,” and she hosts a meme each Saturday where she and others share about their moments of refreshment from the week. Join us and read about our Sabbath moments, or tell us about your own as well.

My Sabbath moments:

On Sunday, our parish’s catechumenate class, which I assist with, enjoyed some delicious Krispy Kreme coffee and donuts while we discussed that day’s scripture readings for mass as well as the Church’s teachings on the fourth commandment, including its implications not just for the family but for society too. Donuts, coffee, God’s word, and spiritual teaching–what a great combination! 🙂

I’ve been doing my best to stick with my daily Bible readings, following a plan to complete the whole Bible in a year. And for the last few days I’ve been praying the rosary daily as well. Though my mind tends to wander quite a bit (I suspect I have adult ADD to some degree), it’s always relaxing to get into the Word and pray the rosay. I can feel myself relax as I go through each decade…

Last night my parents and I watched Toy Story 3, a delightful conclusion to the Toy Story series. It had a wonderful story line and great computer animation (which has come a long way since the first Toy Story film–they can create a lot more detail, such as people’s hair and the textures of stuffed animals). Always enjoyable to see a good clean movie.

Colleen Spiro mentioned in her Sabbath Moments post that enjoying the falling rain one evening this week was an enjoyable experience, and I know what she means. I remember enjoying rainy days as a child. While I of course like a sunny day as much as the next person, I still can find the falling rain pleasant too. The Irish singer Enya has a lovely song called “It’s in the Rain” that captures this feeling. So Colleen, this one’s for you:

It’s in the Rain (lyrics):

Every time
the rain comes down,
close my eyes and listen.
I can hear the lonesome sound
of the sky as it cries…

Listen to the rain
Here it comes again
Hear it in the rain

Feel the touch
of tears that fall
-they won’t fall forever
In the way the day will flow
all things come,
all things go.

Listen to the rain
…the rain…
Here it comes again…
…again….
Hear it in the rain
… the rain…

Late at night
I drift away –
I can hear you calling,
and my name
is in the rain,
leaves on trees whispering,
deep blue sea’s mysteries.

Even when
this moment ends,
can’t let go this feeling.
Everything
will come again
in the sound,
falling down,
of the sky as it cries.
Hear my name in the rain.

  1. Thank you for those lyrics Evan! I really like them. I will have to check on that song.
Loved your sabbath moments as always. Donuts and coffee and scripture sound good to me!
I have not seen Toy Story but it sounds like fun.
I try to read the Bible everyday but miss more than I like to admit. So I admire you for doing so! Maybe this Lent…. and my mind always wanders during the Rosary, too.
Thanks for joining me every week!

    • Enya’s one of my favorite singers. She has a fantastic voice, and her songs are usually very poignant and soothing.

I had let my Bible reading fall by the wayside, so this year I determined to read through the Bible in its entirety. I’ve missed a few days, but I’ll do my best to make up for them. Thanks for hosting “Sabbath Moments” for us!

  2. Love Enya. I also enjoyed the Toy Story series. We must be real kids at heart, which is a good thing. If we forget how to laugh and play we lose perspective.

    • Yes, we need stay in touch with our “inner child” lest we become too serious and hardnosed. The Toy Story series was so creative and the characters were lovable.

  3. Thank you Evan for the beautiful lyrics. I’ll look at rain a bit differently now.

    • It’s a wonderful song. Makes you appreciate the rain more! 🙂

  4. Finding joy in the simple things is a blessing. Beautiful post. I watched Toy Story 3 with my kids recently and we had a rip-roaring time, and had a great discussion about friendship and loyalty afterwards.

    • I can see how that movie could generate a good discussion with your kids about friendship, love, and other values. Just tell them not to let bitterness ruin them like it did “Lots-o-Hugging” Bear! 😉
