Praying for Employment

I’m currently between jobs (which is more palatable than saying I’m unemployed, as “between jobs” implies the optimism that I will find another job). Today I received an email from a prospective employer, only to learn that I didn’t have the qualifications for the job I had applied for. On one hand, I realize that such news shouldn’t deflate me; it simply means that the job wasn’t right for me. However, I nonetheless find myself feeling down. Fears start entering my mind: What if I’m not marketable enough? What if, given the state of our economy, I’m not able to find work? What if I just keep running into brick walls every direction I turn?

A friend of mine I spoke to recently has been unemployed for well over a year now.(Thankfully, he’s been able to get unemployment benefit extensions.) The economy being the way it is, jobs are proving very hard to come by for many folks, so my own job situation has been in my prayers daily!

Today I ran across some prayers on Beliefnet that speak to my circumstances, as well as those of others who like me are seeking work. I’ll pass a few along. But first, this reminder from the book of Proverbs (for my own benefit as well as yours): “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence rely not; in all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Now for the prayers:

Prayer for Employment
Heavenly father, please sustain my spirit as I search for new and meaningful work. You have blessed me with a healthy body and a keen mind for which I am grateful. I ask that you open my path as I seek employment that will allow me to support my family and myself while serving others and your divine purpose. In gratitude and grace, Amen.

Prayer for Prosperity
Dear God, source of Love and Life who brings abundance to all,

Please bring prosperity to me and my family now.

We ask that these basic needs be filled:

Money to pay our bills,

Income to meet our mortgage (rent),

Enough to feed us healthy food,

And more than enough for health care and wellness.

Beyond the material needs,
please uplift our souls.
Inspire our creativity and resourcefulness.

Guide us in improving our lives.

Please help us to hold on to faith And let us find peace.
Amen.
– Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway
Prayer For Rising Above Fear
Dear Lord, please ease our hearts in this world of uncertainty,

As we balance that which we desire with our true need,

As we look for higher values in the midst of material loss,

As we remember the wealth and abundance born of your creation,

And know that as you move us from fear to love,

We will be enriched with the treasures of spirit and peace.
Amen.
– Rev. Victor Fuhrman
Prayer for Strength and Faith
Dear Lord, In these troubling times,

I am filled with unspeakable fears.

I reach my hand out to you now.

I ask you to walk beside me.

Please help me hold on strong,

During these storms.

And help me hold my hopes high,

Even in the darkest hour.
Amen.
– Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway
Blessing For God’s Grace
The Children of Israel hungered in the desert and God gave them Manna.

When the Temple was restored in Jerusalem,

there was only enough lamp oil for one day, but God extended it to eight days.

Jesus fed the multitudes with five loaves and two fish.

With God’s grace, our “cups runneth over” and we “shall not want.”
God provides. Amen.
– Rev. Victor Fuhrman

  1. I will keep you in my prayers.

    • Colleen,
Thanks! I appreciate it. I feel like I need all the prayer support I can get right now!

  2. […] Praying for Employment […]

  3. I will pray for you. My sister is out of work, too. And I am disabled and need to figure out a way to earn some money. It’s hard to trust in God, but He always knows what is best and above all arranges things so that we will be drawn closer to Him even as we perform our earthly duties.

    • Barb,
Thanks. I’ll pray for you as well. Sometimes it’s a challenge to stay cool and trust in God to provide (as He already knows what we need), but it’s the best route! Getting worried never solves anything.

  4. Prayers going up for you, Evan. My God grant you well-suited employment soon.

My husband was out of work over a year before finally finding work a couple of weeks ago, so I know how tough it is.

Praying for you and your sister, too, Barb.

    • Thanks to you as well! I certainly need the prayers. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for people back in the Depression years! But I believe God will provide.
